Game Tutorial

Project Brief

Our team was tasked with designing a comprehensive and adaptive tutorial system for Hyper Flux, a fast-paced platformer centered around gravity manipulation. Although the game’s mechanics and several levels were already developed, the client was unsure how to structure the tutorial. They needed assistance determining whether the tutorial should be forced or self-paced, guided or non-guided, and how to cater to different player groups—from experienced gamers to those less familiar with platforming mechanics.

  • Approach: Layered learning approach with a mix of guided and non-guided tutorials
  • Audience: Experienced platforming gamers and intermediate players requiring additional support
  • Context: Tutorial designed to complement the existing levels and mechanics while enhancing onboarding
  • Platform: PC (current prototype)

Unique Selling Points (USP) of the Tutorial:

  • Adaptive Learning Path: Tailors the tutorial experience based on each player’s platforming skills.
  • Guided and Non-Guided Instruction: Beginners receive step-by-step guidance, while advanced players can explore independently.
  • Seamless Onboarding: The tutorial ensures that players with different skill levels are equally prepared to engage with the core mechanics of the game.
  • Enhanced Player Experience: This feature reduces frustration by avoiding redundant instructions for advanced players while providing necessary support for beginners.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of the tutorial, players will be able to:

  • Demonstrate proficiency in core platforming skills, such as jumping, navigating slopes, and changing direction in mid-air.
  • Effectively manage movement in zero gravity, including adjusting trajectory and maintaining control during freefall.
  • Utilize the Gravity Suit to toggle gravity on and off strategically, maintaining momentum while traversing obstacles.
  • Apply Push and Pull Orbs to interact with the environment and solve platforming challenges.
